How to use Chinese-English dictionary?

1. Online Dictionary

Let's start with an online Chinese-English dictionary. Click here to start the Sunrain online dictionary in a new window. The Sunrain dictionary has both English-Chinese (英汉 ) and Chinese-English (汉英) lookup.

Use of the English-Chinese dictionary is straight forward. Click on 英汉词典 (English-Chinese dictionary), and input English. There are two output options: GB Text and Big 5 Text. These are standards for displaying Chinese on the computer. GB Text is used for Simplified Chinese (the standard in mainland China) and Big 5 Text is for traditional Chinese (the standard in Taiwan). The Sunrain's Big 5 Text output sometimes does not work, but you can ignore this problem. Click on Go! and you are done!

For Chinese-English dictionary (汉 英词典), there are three input options:

  • Pinyin --- if you know the pronunciation of the words
  • GB Text --- Simplified Chinese input
  • Big 5 Text --- Traditional Chinese input

For Pinyin input, you may type in a word or a phrase. The Pinyin tunes will be ignored.

Most users outside of China don't have a Chinese operating system on our computers. Typing a Chinese word is out of question. You may get around this problem by cut-and-paste. This is fine if you are reading online. It will be a big problem if you are reading a book or a newspaper. Of course you can still cut and paste, but don't call me if your computer does not respond.

Bushou index will allow you search for words based on the structure of a Chinese character. We shall introduce Bushou index later.
